There are currently 51 paid members of the Nebraska City
Community Foundation. Their annual dues of $100 help support the
organization and provide scholarships to both traditional and
non-traditional students. In September 2007, four $1,000
scholarships were granted to non-traditional students…one of whom
said she plans to “pay it forward” when she is able by helping
support another student in the future.
The Nebraska City Community Foundation is very interested in
capturing a portion of the inter-generational transfer of wealth
that is now occurring in the United States and Nebraska. It is vital
that communities such as Nebraska City build endowments to keep some
of that wealth at home.
In August, 2007, a $500 challenge grant to a newly formed Youth
Committee of NCCF was matched within a month…the youth raised over
$1,169 by meeting face-to-face with potential donors. The funds will
be used to address language barriers at the elementary level that
the youth identified as a need. The youth are learning about
charitable fund raising, giving back to their community, stewardship
of funds, investing in people, and how foundations operate. The
Youth Committee is now exploring a “pay it forward” program.
A new $40,000 “technology center” was unveiled in 2008 at the Morton
James Public Library paid with earnings from the endowed fund
started by the Grace Moeller estate.
In 2007, Nebraska City set a goal to grow its unrestricted endowment
fund to $600,000. Thanks to donors who gave back to their community
in many in several different ways, the fund grew by 58% to nearly
$50,000 last year. The yearly earnings from this endowment will
enable NCCF to make grants to local projects and programs, each
year, forever.
The Nebraska City Community Foundation is an affiliate of the
Nebraska Community Foundation which maintains its 501(c)(3)
charitable foundation status with the Internal Revenue Service. It
complies with the National Standards of the Council on Foundations.
NCF has 202 affiliated funds (communities, donor advised funds and
organizational funds) operating in 70 of the Nebraska’s 93 counties.
